Amazon VPC

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) is a service that allows users to create a logically isolated network within the AWS cloud.

Description

Amazon VPC enables users to launch AWS resources in a virtual network that they define. This isolation allows for greater control over the network configuration, including the selection of IP address ranges, subnets, route tables, and network gateways. Users can create a private network environment that mimics a traditional data center while leveraging the scalability, reliability, and security benefits of AWS. VPC supports various configurations such as public and private subnets, allowing instances in private subnets to access the internet through a NAT gateway. Additionally, users can connect their on-premises data centers to their VPC via AWS Direct Connect or VPN connections, creating a hybrid cloud architecture. Security features such as security groups and network access control lists (ACLs) allow for fine-grained access control, enhancing the security posture of applications hosted in the VPC. This flexibility and control make Amazon VPC a fundamental building block for deploying secure and scalable applications in the cloud.

Examples

  • A company can use Amazon VPC to host a web application in a public subnet while keeping its database in a private subnet for enhanced security.
  • An organization can establish a VPN connection between their on-premises infrastructure and an Amazon VPC to extend their internal network into the cloud.

Additional Information

  • Amazon VPC supports IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, allowing for modern and future-proof network configurations.
  • VPC Flow Logs can be enabled to monitor the traffic flowing to and from network interfaces, providing insights for network troubleshooting and security auditing.
