AWS Organizations

A service that enables you to manage multiple AWS accounts centrally.

Description

AWS Organizations is a service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that allows users to consolidate multiple AWS accounts into an organization for easier management and governance. It provides a hierarchical structure where accounts can be grouped into organizational units (OUs) for policy application and billing management. Through AWS Organizations, administrators can set up Service Control Policies (SCPs) to define permissions for accounts and OUs, ensuring compliance and security across the organization. It also simplifies billing by allowing consolidated billing across accounts, enabling organizations to take advantage of volume discounts. By using AWS Organizations, companies can implement a multi-account strategy, which enhances security and operational efficiency, supports resource isolation, and provides better cost management. Organizations can also use AWS Single Sign-On (SSO) for seamless access to multiple accounts, making it easier for teams to collaborate and manage resources effectively.

Examples

  • A large enterprise like Netflix uses AWS Organizations to manage its various AWS accounts for different departments, ensuring that each team adheres to specific policies while sharing billing benefits.
  • A startup may utilize AWS Organizations to separate its development and production environments into different accounts, applying specific security policies to the production account while allowing developers more flexibility in the dev account.

Additional Information

  • AWS Organizations supports both AWS accounts created through the console and those created via the AWS CLI or SDKs.
  • It enables the application of policies across multiple accounts, which is crucial for maintaining compliance with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
