Elastic Block Store (EBS)
A scalable block storage service designed to work with Amazon EC2 instances.
Description
Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) is a cloud-based storage solution that provides highly available and reliable block storage volumes for use with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances. EBS volumes are designed for both throughput and transaction-intensive workloads, making them suitable for databases, enterprise applications, and big data analytics. Each EBS volume is automatically replicated within its Availability Zone to protect against component failure, ensuring high durability and availability. EBS supports a variety of volume types, including SSD-backed options for high-performance applications and HDD-backed options for throughput-intensive workloads. Users can easily create snapshots of their volumes, enabling data backup and recovery, as well as the ability to create new volumes from those snapshots. EBS is also integrated with AWS services such as AWS Lambda and Amazon RDS, enhancing its versatility in cloud architectures.
Examples
- Using EBS to host a MySQL database that requires persistent storage and high availability.
- Leveraging EBS snapshots to back up data for an application running on EC2, facilitating quick recovery in the event of data loss.
Additional Information
- EBS volumes can be dynamically resized, allowing users to adjust storage capacity as their needs change without downtime.
- EBS offers encryption options to ensure data security at rest and in transit, complying with regulatory requirements.
