AWS Snowball
A data transport solution that helps to securely transfer large amounts of data into and out of the AWS Cloud.
Description
AWS Snowball is a physical data transport appliance designed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) to facilitate the secure transfer of large volumes of data to and from the AWS Cloud. Organizations often face challenges when dealing with massive datasets over the Internet due to bandwidth limitations, high transfer costs, and long upload times. Snowball addresses these issues by providing a rugged, secure device that customers can use to load data locally and then ship it to AWS. Once the device arrives at the AWS facility, the data is uploaded to Amazon S3 or other AWS services. Snowball is designed to handle up to petabytes of data, enabling enterprises like Netflix and National Geographic to migrate their archival data to the cloud efficiently and cost-effectively. The service includes encryption and built-in tamper resistance to ensure data security throughout the transfer process.
Examples
- Netflix used AWS Snowball to migrate large amounts of video content to AWS, allowing for efficient cloud storage and processing.
- National Geographic utilized Snowball to transfer millions of images and videos for their cloud-based archiving and content delivery.
Additional Information
- AWS Snowball comes in two versions: Snowball Edge, which includes compute capabilities for edge processing.
- The service supports both data import and export, making it a versatile solution for cloud migration and backup.
